Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation participates at the International Conference for Central African Republic

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, Hernâni Coelho, visited Brussels from 16 to 18 November 2016 to attend the Conference on the Central African Republic organized by the European Union in partnership with the Government of the Central African Republic.

This Conference provided the CAR authorities with an opportunity not only to present their national strategy and stability and development priorities for the next five years but also to establish reform commitments.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation delivered a speech in the framework of the Conference, regarding Timor-Leste’s position and expressed its support for CAR, stressing that since the beginning “as a brother in the framework of the Fragile Post-Conflict States- The g7+, Timor-Leste has given special attention and interest to the Central African Republic. “

With regard to the latest developments of the CAR, the Minister recalled the history and long journey that Timor-Leste had to take in order to become the democratic and peaceful Nation that it is today. It welcomed the efforts made by the international community, including the European Union, and the efforts made by the people and the leaders of the Central African Republic.

The European Commission committed € 409 million ($ 450 million) for the period 2016-2020, additional commitments were also made by Member States amounting to € 298 million ($ 328 million). The Government of Timor-Leste has made a contribution of USD $ 1.5 million for humanitarian assistance and peacebuilding in the CAR. One part will be channeled through the g7 + secretariat and another part will be directly channeled to the RCA Government. Overall, € 2.06 billion ($ 2.28 billion) were pledged to support RCA’s efforts to achieve peace, security and reconciliation, as well as to promote economic recovery and development, with Humanitarian assistance.

The conference brought delegations from more than 80 countries, international organizations and agencies.
